En relation avec un passage de l'article de J[ean] S[chopfer], «In the Crowd at the Paris Exposition. With Woodcuts drawn and engraved by F. Vallotton», The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine (New York), vol. LXI, n^o1, novembre 1900, p. 160.

Conformément à la source, autrement dit l’article publié dans The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, le titre français correct de cette xylographie, issue de la série L’Exposition universelle, est Le Feu d’artifice (voir ici), et non Feu d’artifice tel que donné par Louis Godefroy en 1932 (Godefroy, 1932, n^o 213) et repris en 1972 dans le catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre gravé de Vallotton (Vallotton et Goerg, 1972, n^o 208, p. 231).

Le passage correspondant à l’illustration évoque la foule qui attend patiemment les feux d’artifice : « The crowds wait patiently for the fireworks, which make a splendid finish to the day’s festivity. Close by, one can see the outlines of the dense mass of spectators, fading away into obscurity [l’autrice souligne]. A report resounds, all the faces are uplifted, eyes pierce the gloom, and suddenly in the sky, which seems blacker by comparison with so much brilliancy centered on the earth, a marvelous flower of light unfolds [l’autrice souligne]. Finally, a drum sounds the retreat, and the happy crowds disperse. » (p. 160).
